So, I Need a Car

So.

I'm starting to look at cars this week (online) and as much as I hate being rushed (I really, really do), I've gotta move quick. Because after I return from Colorado, I'm officially car-less (I'm currently borrowing my dad's while he's away on business). So, here's what I'm deciding between. Help?

Reminder: I have no idea what I'm doing. None.

Toyota Corolla

Honda Civic

VW Jetta

Alright, let's hear it. Which one do you think I should get?

Something (I think is) worth noting: you have a fair amount of pull in this decision. Yep, I value you guys that much.

Happy Monday?

All are great cars but for some extra cooooooool, I'd say Jetta! I can totally see you in a Jetta.

I have a VW and I love my car. It is VERY expensive to get worked on though. Simple things like replacing headlights or regular service can and usually does end up being quite a bit of money. Much more so than Japanese produced vehicles. As far as design and function they're fantastic, but in the long run you'll probably spend more money on a VW.

i vote jetta because i always wanted a jetta and they're so darn cute and i would drive vicariously through you.

I love your options because I drive a Corolla, my parents currently own a Jetta, and we are purchasing a Civic in about a month! I love my Corolla with my life and, if I could, I'd drive it forever. But in the research we've done (through paper, internet, asking friends, our own experience, etc), a Civic is supposedly the safest and best of all 3. The Jetta is cute and safe but the repairs/tune-ups are EXPENSIVE. Toyota is pretty standard in terms of cost and repairs, but since Honda is so widespread and popular here you're more likely to find better deals if you were to ever need parts or assistance.

Well... I had a Corolla (2002) that I loved and worked great until I recently got my new Rav4 (which I'm in love with, btw). Despite Toyota's recent "troubles" I still think they're a great brand, and am a Toyota loyalist. Josh has had a Jetta since 2002 as well, and he's such a boy with his car (it's dirty, never has maintenance on time, full of Molly hair, etc), and it still runs pretty well (though I think my car ran smoother even though it was the same age as his). It feels like more of a tank than my Corolla (a lot more weight behind it), and like people have said, I think it's more $$ to work on. Having said that, I also agree that I could totally see you in a Jetta.

Have you considered a hybrid? I only ask because I know you tend to do a lot of driving sometimes since you live sorta far from work.

I've got nuthin' to say about Honda...

But the real question is: what color?!

jetta = NO WAY.
i'd go with honda, but that is just me.

VW is definitely a quality machine but everyone is right, it's expensive to get repaired. Something to consider when owning a car -- especially in California!

If you want to go with cost effective, I'd go with a Civic. My drummer has one and it has actually been the most reliable car out of all of the band members (so we make him haul stuff hehe). The new Civics are also waaaay comfy rides.

I have a Corolla, but it's the previous model, and I've heard from my sister that the newer one isn't as nice. She test-drove it, and she ended up getting a Civic, which she loves, and I think is pretty nice.

I don't trust VW... everyone I know who has had one has had problems with it.

Good luck!

As a Toyota distibutor wife I say go with Corolla! But even if I wasnt, i'd still say Toyota. They are the best! :) and very efficient when something goes wrong.
and safe!

My sister has a Jetta and I'm kind of obsessed with it. That's really all I got - I haven't had a car since I graduated from college.

you know what's so wierd, I'm looking for a car too - and I'm in love with the Jetta!

Get the Jetta! We can both be Jetta-driving teachers! :)

In my search for a car I've heard bad things about Jettas (VW work costing lots of money, etc etc) but I've never heard anything bad about dem Hondas.

I still need a car for when I come out there...HELP! hahaha

I'm on my second Honda and I love it!! I've never had a problem with either Honda I've owned.

A friend of mine bought a Jetta a few years ago and hated it!! She got rid of it in less than 6 months.

But, really, you just have to test drive each one to see what is best for YOU.

I do think jettas are cute, but again, have heard people have problems with them. Go for the honda, hello reliability :).

Jetta, Jetta, Jetta!!! I have been a VW owner for years. I just keep trading them in for another...Jetta, Passatt, Touareg...VW's are the best! But wait, there is a little downside...their maintenance is a tad on the pricier side, but I think it's worth it.

My guy at the dealership told me that they have/are opening a manufacturing plan in TN or somewhere else down South so the fact that the cars don't have to be shipped from Europe will dramatically decrease the cost of them. Don't know if this will actually be in motion in time for you to purchase though...

I have a Jetta and I love. My next car will be a VW.

Jetta. Hands down. I had a Jetta before I got my vw bug and loved it. I really like how all vw's feel solid and safe. They're reliable and most importantly look great!

P.S. I like your blog!

I know this is the "less glam" option, but I vote for the Civic. They're really fucking reliable and really cheap to fix. Plus they get great gas mileage. This is all important stuff living in Los Angeles. Have you considered getting a hybrid? They come in hybrid form. If I needed to get a new car (knock on wood), I'd get a Civic or Accord Hybrid. I feel like that would be a prudent choice.

You'll have to let us know what you decide love, I love Toyota's but then there is that issue with the breaks. I think they have fixed it now but it seems like a lot of gals like the Jetta on here...

Honda!!!! I have an Accord and LOVE IT. I've never heard anyone have any troubles with a Honda and most will tell you- they last forever. A friend of mine has a VW and hates it- it's been in the shop quite a bit.

HONDA!!!
