Why Shattered Glass Shattered My Soul

Hello Monday! You could've taken your time, you know.

No. Seriously. I mean it.

How was everyone's weekend?

I didn't exactly have one. Well, I mean, I had a weekend but it was a weekend full of production. Which I knew when I told my friend I'd be the production coordinator for his short film, Castle In the Sky (if you follow me on Twitter, now you know what that lovely #castleinthesky hash tag is all about -- ta da!).

So I won't have much of a weekend for the next 2 weekends, which is really fine by me because I'm enjoying this project.

However.

Answer me this: have you ever tried to make fake glass? Yanno, the kind that people use for films so that the actors don't actually bleed their brains out but instead just look like they're being critically injured...by glass?

I'd never done it, but (stupid me) thought it would be easy to make for our second day of filming (a car accident scene, to put it into context). I mean, look at the recipe (found via this video, which is definitely one of the stranger things I've seen):
-2 cups water
-3.5 cups sugar
-1 cup corn syrup
-1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

Mix in bowl until boiling (at roughly 300 degrees). Pour onto sprayed cookie sheet and let set (for about an hour).

Cake! Now, I'm no domestic diva, but I could surely do this.

3 tries later on Saturday night, I was singing a different tune (and drinking a glass of wine).

Liquid. It was pure liquid, and the damn crap had been "setting" for about 2 hours at this point.

When I woke up Sunday morning, nothing had changed. And the glass was needed for that day's shoot.

Cue panic attack!

Wanted to do this.

But no time!

Since I have absolutely nothing left to lose, I made a fourth batch. And it started to harden (TWSS)! But never finished (TWSS). Ever. Stuck it in the freezer (not part of the directions) at our shooting location. Nada. Had no choice but to put the cookie sheet full of non-glass BS into my car, where it proceeded to ooze onto the passenger seat and make a sticky, disgusting, non-glass BS mess.

Oh, look Ali! It's time for the car accident scene! How 'bout that glass?

I splatter it on the dashboard of the car, ready to hang my head in shame, when I notice that it kind of looks like glass. Droopy, sagging glass...but glass nevertheless.

Add to that the fact that the makeup artist came up with the brilliant idea to make lines in the goop with one of her brushes, and this story has a bit of a happy ending after all.

First moral of the story? Never try making shattered glass from scratch. Pun sort of intended?

Second moral of the story? Film shoots are never supposed to run smoothly.

Third moral of the story? Real work sucks the day after you work on your friend's film.

I'm impressed you tried it that many times... I would have given up after the first time and bought a pane of glass to use... with full body protection, of course for my actors.
